Work on South Elmsall’s new public transport hub starts on Tuesday 30 August.

West Yorkshire Combined Authority, in partnership with Wakefield Council, is developing a new £320,000 Transport Hub for South Elmsall. Work starts on Tuesday 30 August and is expected to last for around 10 weeks.

As part of the scheme, new shelters with improved lighting and yournextbus real-time departure screens will be installed and a new-style ‘Metro’ hub totem fitted with a digital clock and information panels.A re-designed pedestrian crossing from the bus stands across the ‘island’, will enable easier access for passengers to Doncaster Road.

Cllr Peter Box CBE, Leader of Wakefield Council and Chair of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, said:“This hub will provide important interconnectivity for our transport services across the Wakefield district. I’m pleased that investment is being made in our local public transport to improve facilities for our residents.”

Cllr Keith Wakefield, Chair of West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s Transport Committee said: “I am delighted to see work is underway for a new Transport Hub which will coordinate services and improve facilities at the current South Elmsall Bus Station site, which is served by 16local bus routes and used by over 193,000bus passengers a year.

“Feedback from the public consultation showed 94% of local residents and businesses were supportive of the scheme.

“By improving access to the transport network through projects such as this, the West Yorkshire Combined Authority helps to connect people to a wide range of destinations and opportunities for employment, training and education.”
