Transport Hubs

The Transport Hubs programme delivered a network of locations that, through the provision of highly visible, easily recognisable features, facilities and branding, enables users to enjoy trouble-free access to a wide range of destinations across the Leeds City Region, as well as achieving a step change in the quality of the interchange experience.

LTP3 Proposal 14 envisaged a strategy to develop a high level of integration and interchange between public transport services and with other travel modes. 

The philosophy is that access to a transport hub provides easy access to the whole transport network. Hubs are envisaged as locations on the core public transport network easily accessible by bus, rail (where a station facility is provided), cycle, walking, taxi and car. Hubs can be largely defined as places where interchange already takes place and/or where there are adjacent services and facilities which make them destinations in their own right. 

The Transport Hubs Programme aims to address current user uncertainties regarding how best to access the core transport system and overcome any reluctance to interchange between services and modes.

There are currently two strands to the Hub programme: 

(i) IP1 Programme (2011-2014) 

The following sites were selected for inclusion in the IP1 programme. These sites, which are now are now complete, have been provided with a range of improvement measures which includes hub totems or enhanced place signage, new or refurbished bus shelters and improved pedestrian links with new better way finder information: 

  • Shipley 
  • Todmorden 
  • Holmfirth 
  • Morley (Phase 1)
  • Wakefield Kirkgate 
  • Wakefield Westgate 

(ii) IP2 Programme (2014-18) 

The following schemes were delivered in the Hub IP2 programme:

  • Heckmondwike: New off-street 4 stand bus facility with Hub Totem, new shelters and real time displays, improved wayfinder signage. Scheme complete.
  • Normanton: Hubs Totem in Market Place, new bus shelters, improvements to pedestrian route between Town Centre bus stops and Rail Station. Scheme complete.
  • South Elmsall: Bus Station redevelopment including Hub Totem, new shelters and real time displays., improvements to pedestrian route between Bus and Rail Stations. Scheme complete.
  • Bradford Royal Infirmary: Provision of bus departure real time screen as part of hospital redevelopment. Installed January 2017.
  • Morley Phase 2: New bus stops and traffic flow system in the town centre. Scheme complete March 2018.
