South Elmsall Transport Hub

WYCA, in partnership with Wakefield Council, have completed delivery of a Transport Hub scheme in South Elmsall town centre. The scheme has included a refurbishment of the bus station, improved pedestrian connectivity between the bus and rail station and enhanced pedestrian wayfinding signage between the town centre, bus station and rail station.

The scheme.

A Transport Hub is a location where a range of transport services and passengers come together. Facilities at a Hub can include improved passenger facilities; safety features; clear branding; signage and public information; and improvements to the quality of the environment in the Hub area.South Elmsall construction progress photo 3

The construction works at South Elmsall Bus Station commenced in August 2016 and were completed on 4th November 2016.  The works have included:

  • Replacement of existing shelters with modern units provided with internal illumination and real-time display screens. 
  • Provision of a new, illuminated Hub Totem fitted with integral digital clock and information panels.
  • Minor amendments to the internal layout of the bus station including:
    • Alterations to kerblines and heights
    • Modifications to the 'island' on Doncaster Road
    • Improvements to the pedestrian crossing between the bus stands and the 'island'.
    • Renewal of the bus station carriageway
     
  • Improved pedestrian facilities on the Station Road approach to the Rail Station.
      
  • A complementary signage scheme in the area.

Previous milestones.

 Public consultation.

A public consultation exercise on the scheme proposals was held and the results showed that 94 % of local people were in support of the scheme.

Tender.

The scheme construction works were put out to tender in April 2016 and the contract was awarded to Amey LG in June 2016.
