Wakefield bus review

The Wakefield Area Bus Network Review sought to examine Metro's expenditure on bus services in the Wakefield area. The main aim was to maintain an effective bus network for the District at a lower cost to the local taxpayer. The bus services changed over the weekend of 28/29 April 2012.

Many bus services in the Wakefield district are operated commercially and were not included in Metro's review. Services in the Wakefield City area will be reviewed in 2013.

Wakefield is served by a number of core bus services.

Consultation took place during September and October 2011 and we received a lot of comments which helped us make some amendments to our proposals.

Main outcomes following consultation and tendering

  • A number of bus services changed operator.
  • Services 408 and 409 still operate through from Pontefract to Doncaster during Monday to Saturday daytime.
  • Stagecoach now operate an evening and Sunday service on Service 47 between Upton and Barnsley.
  • During the Sunday daytime period, Stagecoach now operate a through service between Barnsley and Wakefield on Service 59.
  • Tate's Travel introduced a two hourly Sunday daytime service on Service 96 between Barnsley and Wakefield.
  • There was no reduction to Services 194, 195 or 196. Both Arriva and Tate's Travel now operate on Service 195, providing more buses on this route.
  • There are later evening journeys on Service 443 between Wakefield and Hall Green.
