  • All aboard the Dewsbury freetownbus

A new Metro freetownbus service for Dewsbury will be launched on Saturday 12 December.

Easily recognisable in the special MetroConnect livery, the buses will run every ten minutes from 7.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday and from 8.30am to 5pm on Saturdays - and journeys on the bus are free!

Each vehicle is fully accessible and can carry wheelchairs and pushchairs. Operated by Star Travel, the buses are all low emission vehicles with the latest 'Euro-5' engines and fitted with CCTV.

The three kilometres route will link nine key locations around Dewsbury town centre including the Bus Station, Dewsbury Health Centre, the Rail Station, Dewsbury Market (Northgate), Market Place, Princess of Wales Precinct, the Retail Park, Sainsbury's and Dewsbury Minster.

Dewsbury's freetownbus is the latest MetroConnect bus service and has been developed and funded jointly by Metro, Kirklees Council and Sainsbury's following the success of the hugely popular Huddersfield freetownbus.

Announcing the service, Cllr Ryk Downes, Metro Chairman, said, "Since the start of the first service in January 2006, Metro's free buses in Leeds, Huddersfield, Wakefield and Bradford have carried over 9 million passengers between them.

"Used by thousands of people every day, they are hugely popular and I have no doubt that they will become a favourite with the people of Dewsbury.

Cllr David Sheard, Kirklees Council's Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Environment and Transport, said: "This new bus service will give people easier access to Dewsbury's wide range of shops and services. It will particularly help those people who find it difficult to get around town on foot and it will hopefully reduce the number of cars in the town centre - cutting congestion and pollution."

Tim Morris, Sainsbury's Store Manager, said: "We are delighted to be supporting a free transport service for Dewsbury that will give people easy access to popular areas within the town centre. We are sure that this will be very popular with customers, and with our staff."
