Monorail

11 July 2007

Monorails are electrically powered systems which are completely segregated from other traffic and run on tracks which are built above street level. Monorail vehicles can either be supported by or suspended from the tracks.

Wuppertal SchwebebahnMonorails have a clear advantage in that they have a dedicated right of way and do not share roadspace with other vehicles, however there can be difficulties in integrating these systems into the wider transport network and with regard to the level of visual intrusion. To date Monorails have largely been associated with specific high profile developments or leisure attractions.

Examples of Monorails:

  • Schwebebahn, Wuppertal, Germany
  • Dortmund, Germany
  • Sydney, Australia
  • Las Vegas, USA
