Segregated Busway

More information on Segregated Busways

11 July 2007

Segregated busways are essentially bus-only roads that enable buses to achieve faster journey times and increased reliability due to the removal of other traffic. Segregated busways require significant land to be available or can be created by the reallocation of roadspace to buses on existing routes.

Segregated busways have, in the past, been used as a method of reserving land for a future upgrade to a different transport technology e.g. light rail. Indeed when providing a link to a new development area it may be appropriate to provide a bus link in the early stages of the development and then later upgrade this to a higher capacity mode as the development area grows.
