ITA pays tribute to Cllr Graham Phelps

Politicians of all parties on the West Yorkshire Integrated Transport Authority (ITA) have paid tribute to Cllr Graham Phelps who has sadly passed away.

Cllr Graham PhelpsCouncillors at today's West Yorkshire Integrated Transport Authority meeting stood to observe a minute's silence in memory of Cllr Phelps.

Chairman Cllr Ryk Downes said, “Graham was a tireless worker on behalf of bus and train passengers both in his own Wakefield District and across West Yorkshire.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”

Opposition Leader and Labour colleague Cllr Mick Lyons said, “Graham was a PTA and ITA member for over 11 years, was Wakefield District Spokesperson for nine years and was my Vice Chairman between 1999 and 2004.

“He was a valued colleague and friend who you could always rely on to 'tell it like it is’."

Deputy ITA Chairman and Conservative Leader Cllr Chris Greaves said, “Despite our differences politically, there was no doubting Graham’s commitment to improving public transport for people throughout West Yorkshire.

"On a personal level it was always a pleasure to be in Graham's company and I will miss our wide ranging and always enjoyable conversations."

Wakefield Councillor Mike Walker paid tribute to Cllr Phelps' skill and kindness in running meetings saying he treated people with terrific respect.

"The greatest loss will be to the people of Airedale whom he represented," said Cllr Walker.

Councillor Phelps was a Castleford Labour councillor for more than 20 years, representing the Airedale and Ferry Fryston ward.

Wakefield Council Leader Cllr Peter Box said: “Graham was a well-regarded colleague, liked by everyone who came into contact with him.

"He was a dedicated local councillor and passionate about public transport. He will be sadly missed. Our sympathies are with his family and friends at this sad time.”
