Shadow Transport Secretary Theresa Villiers
concluded a tour of West Yorkshire by meeting with Metro's Chairman
Councillor Chris Greaves and its Director General Kieran
Preston.
During her fact-finding visit on
Friday 30 January, Ms Villiers also took the opportunity to visit
the construction site of Metro's new Brighouse Bus Station and its
Bradford Interchange. She also had a chance to see Brighouse's rail
station, which the Passenger Transport Executive opened in 2000 and
Leeds rail station which underwent a massive refurbishment between
1999 and 2002.
"Today's meeting was an opportunity
for us to tell Theresa Villiers about what we have already achieved
in West Yorkshire through groundbreaking projects such as our
yournextbus real-time text service, Mybus yellow school buses and
our award-winning bus station renewals," said Councillor
Greaves.
"We were also able to have a positive
discussion about our future objectives for public transport for
West Yorkshire and the Leeds City Region including plans for New
Generation Transport and Tram-Train and the need to develop an
attractive and affordable bus network that really meets passengers'
needs."
"My visit today has been hugely
informative and has given me real insight into transport concerns
in the area," said Ms Villiers.
"Rail overcrowding continued to be a
major concern in the area," she added.
