  • Automatic ticket gates at Leeds rail station

Artist's impression of automatic ticket gates at Leeds stationSimilar to those used on London Underground, the gates are expected to make it easier for passengers to travel through the station and help reduce the number of people travelling without a ticket.

Passengers with credit card-sized tickets - over 75% of the people who pass through Leeds every day - simply need to insert the ticket into the gate, take the ticket back and the gate will open for them.

    MetroCard holders

Holders of Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly or Annual MetroCards, valid for Rail Zones 1-3, 1-4 or 1-5, can also use the tickets gates if they bought their cards from a staffed rail station. These cards will have a black, magnetic strip on the back of the card.

Holders of MetroCards without the magnetic strip can still show their card to a member of rail staff.

Regular train travellers should renew their MetroCards at staffed rail stations, to ensure that they are issued with a card with a magnetic strip.

Holders of old-style CIV tickets (which are long and thin) and other tickets or passes (such as the scratch-off DayRovers) will also have to show their tickets to a member of staff before being allowed through.

Posters and leaflets explaining how the gates work are available at Leeds and other stations.
