Metro, in partnership with local bus operators and the five
District Councils, has submitted a bid for funding to create a new
Smartcard retail network across West Yorkshire.
'Smart Journeys' is a £4.35m bid from the Department for
Transport's (DfT) Better Bus Area Fund, which proposes the
expansion and acceleration of smartcard ticketing in West
Yorkshire, building upon existing investment by Metro and bus
operators. It also includes Smartcard ticketing in York as an
optional component, and a successful bid would be matched by
£8.9m of funding from Metro, the West Yorkshire Local
Transport Plan and the bus operators.
The bid aims to maximise the potential growth of Smartcards in
West Yorkshire by equipping more buses with Smartcard-enabled
ticket machines, creating an accessible retail network which will
be able to issue and replace Pay-As-You-Go and season ticket
Smartcards, as well as offer an alternative way to apply for a
Senior, Disabled of Blind Person's English National Concessionary
Scheme pass, either in person or through an enhanced, dedicated
