Patronage has increased steadily to more than double the number since 2000 with over 30 million passenger journeys made each year using the 67 stations on the MetroTrain network.
Investment over the years by Metro in new stations and the refurbishment of existing ones, acquisition of new rolling stock, careful planning of timetables and commitment to the development of the local rail network through schemes such as Leeds-Bradford electrification have all contributed.
Heavily involved in all stages of the franchising process, Metro and the PTA are anxious to ensure the protection of the existing levels and quality of service and to seek the commitment of train operating companies (especially Northern the operator of local rail services in West Yorkshire) and Network Rail, the infrastructure provider, to continuing improvements and development, including specific projects such as:
- additional Class 333 vehicles operating on the electrified Airedale and Wharfedale Lines;
- expansion of park and ride opportunities;
- new stations, such as the one opened at Glasshoughton on 21 February 2005;
- improved waiting facilities and new staffed ticket offices such as those provided at Shipley, Horsforth, Guiseley and New Pudsey stations.
Metro supported Leeds 1st, the major initiative by the former Railtrack at this important gateway, and are pleased to be involved in carrying forward schemes for the expansion and modernisation of the local rail network.
