Introducing Smartcards
Train
If you live in West Yorkshire, you can use your Blind Person's Pass to get free train travel at any time of day, for all journeys within West Yorkshire.
Are you eligible for a Blind Person's Pass?
‘Blind’ is defined as having a high degree of vision loss. For example seeing much less than is normal, or perhaps seeing nothing at all.
In general terms a person will be eligible for a Blind Pass if they cannot see (with glasses, if worn) the top letter of the eye test chart used by opticians and doctors, at a distance of three metres.
Companions and guide dogs
If you are unable to travel conveniently alone, you may be entitled to a special pass entitling a companion to the same concessions when travelling with you in West Yorkshire. Your companion does not need to be the same person for every journey.
Guide dogs travel for free and there are no restrictions for travelling on the lower deck of buses.
Applying
When applying for the first time you will need to have your application approved by your local Social Services office.
Bus pass exclusions
You cannot use a Blind Pass on certain special bus services, excursions, tours, private hire vehicles, school and works contract services, and services for which you need to pre-book.
For further information about which bus services your Blind Pass is valid on, please contact MetroLine: 0113 245 7676.
Train travel outside West Yorkshire
If part of your train journey includes points outside West Yorkshire, you must pay the additional fare before you travel. This will normally be the full adult fare for the non-West Yorkshire section of your journey.
If you do not pay for the non-West Yorkshire part of the journey before setting off, you may be charged the full adult fare for the entire journey. Fares may be combined only to and from a station at which your train makes a scheduled stop.
