  • Scholar's PhotoCard

    Entitles 16-18 year olds, in full-time education, to half price bus and rail travel

     What is a Scholar's PhotoCard?

    A Scholar's PhotoCard is for 16 to 18 year old students in full-time education. It is valid from the start of the school or college academic year until the following 15 September or day before your 19th birthday (whichever is first).


    You use the PhotoCard to get the following travel within West Yorkshire:

    • half-price bus and train travel.
    • half-price rail season tickets
    • buy a School Plus MetroCard
    • travel anywhere in West Yorkshire at any time of day, including evenings and weekends (except NightRider and special event services).

    How much does it cost?

    There is a £5 administration fee when you apply for your PhotoCard.

    How to get your PhotoCard

    The applicant must apply in person and provide: 

    • a completed application form. Your school or college will supply the application form, which they need to stamp and date for you
    • other official notification such as a course offer letter (you will then need to complete the application form at the Travel Centre)
    • £5 fee.
    • There is no need to provide a photograph as the Travel Centre will take one for you.

    If this is your first smart PhotoCard you must also bring:

    • proof that you live in West Yorkshire, such as a bank statement.
    • proof of identity and age, such as your birth certificate or NHS medical card.
    • a photograph will be taken at the Travel Centre, so there is no need to take one with you.

    Where to get it

    Go to any Bus Station Travel Centre in West Yorkshire to apply. Your smartcard will then be posted to you.


    Lost or damaged PhotoCards

    There is a £5 fee to replace a lost or damaged Scholar's PhotoCard.  The replacement will have the same expiry date as your previous PhotoCard.


    You can order a replacement by:

    Travel Centre staff will confirm that you are on our database before ordering the replacement.  If you are not on the database, you will have to re-apply for a Scholar's PhotoCard.


    Stolen PhotoCards

    If your Scholar's PhotoCard has been stolen, report it to the police. They will give you a Crime Reference Number, which you will need to quote when you order your replacement card.  There is no charge for replacing a stolen PhotoCard.


    You can order a replacement for your stolen PhotoCard by:

    • Calling MetroLine on 0113 245 7676 and quoting your Crime Reference Number.
    • Going to a Bus Station Travel Centre - take your Crime Reference Number.

    Travelling into North Yorkshire on Transdev services

    With a Scholar's PhotoCard you can travel on all Transdev Keighley & District, Harrogate & District and Coastliner services into and within North Yorkshire.

    For Keighley and District services you will be charged half fare.
    For Harrogate and District and Coastliner service you will receive a third off the fare.

    Young Persons rail travel outside of West Yorkshire

    The National Rail Conditions of Carriage allow young people under the age of 16 to travel at half fare on all trains. For travel outside of West Yorkshire, beyond the last West Yorkshire stopping station, full fare is payable for West Yorkshire Scholar's Photocard holders, unless they are in possession of a discounted railcard such as a 16-25 Railcard.
