6: When you can use your MetroCard

MetroCard Conditions of Use.

a) MetroCards may be used in West Yorkshire on virtually all ordinary stopping bus services and train services for which the ticket held is valid, except:
(i) Bus Services:
NightRiders, football or concert specials, long-distance coaches, excursions, tours, contract, chartered or other privately hired bus services
(ii) Train Services:
Charter trains or certain scheduled trains which do not permit a trip to be made wholly within West Yorkshire. Bus MetroCards are not valid on trains at any time. Use of MetroCards on train is restricted to standard class accommodation.

b) Your MetroCard does not grant you priority in boarding or seating on any service.

c) The MetroCard allows you to travel throughout West Yorkshire by bus and by rail in the zones specified on the ticket subject to 5a) above.

d) MetroCard may be used to pay only for the West Yorkshire element of cross boundary journey.
(i) Bus journeys
you pay the cost of the journey between your journey start and destination outside West Yorkshire and the West Yorkshire boundary.

ii) Train journeys

If commencing your journey at a staffed station you should purchase your ticket prior to boarding. You will be charged for the out of county portion of your journey from/to the last/first scheduled stop made in West Yorkshire. If you fail to purchase a ticket prior to boarding at a staffed station you will be charged for the whole of your journey and your MetroCard will not be valid for that journey.

When boarding at an unstaffed station or when the ticket office is closed you should purchase your ticket for the out of county portion of your journey on the train.

Any passenger wishing to travel beyond the area covered by a Rail MetroCard must pay for the additional part of the journey in accordance with the above. The additional fare will be calculated from the outer-most train station on the route within the Rail Zones covered by your ticket.

Where a passenger holds two or more zonal tickets in combination or one is a rail season ticket and one is not, then the train does not need to call at the station where they change from one to the other. (Please note that these combinations of tickets do not apply to non-stopping trains operated by Virgin, GNER and Midland Mainline).

e) You must ensure that your MetroCard is valid for the journey you intend to take. Passengers found using MetroCards before the due start date or after the expiry date shown, using them fraudulently in any way or using defaced or damaged tickets may have their ticket confiscated without right of refund and be liable to an Excess Fare and/or criminal prosecution.

f) A MetroCard may not be used as an identity card.

The MetroCard remains the property of Metro. Metro and participating operators may require a holder to produce it for inspection while travelling and may withdraw the MetroCard if an irregularity is observed. MetroCards are not transferable.
