A travel plan is a strategic package of initiatives to reduce car use and improve efficiency. There are many benefits to travel planning such as improved image within the community, improved health and morale of the workforce and better access to labour pools. The greatest benefit of a travel plan will come through the reduction of business travel costs through measures that reduce the need to travel and that improve the efficiency of existing business travel.
Metro’s development and implementation of its own travel plan also strengthens its position in encouraging external organisations to develop workplace and school travel plans. Metro conducts an annual travel ’snapshot’ survey to find out how staff travel to work. The most recent survey in March 2006 indicates that over 85% of Metro staff use public transport to travel to work. The average use of public transport for the Leeds central cordon is 40%.
Metro is also member of the WhizzGo car club. WhizzGo offers brand new cars parked in designated on-street bays within walking distance of the office for hire by the hour from £3.95 including fuel and VAT.
Based on detailed research into similar club in Europe clubs over the past few years, the environmental benefits of car clubs are now well established. As well as reducing congestion, they are also more energy efficient with lower emissions.
