Accessibility Improvements at Rail Stations

Opportunities for improved access to rail stations being explored

Metro is continuing to explore opportunities for improving access to West Yorkshire rail stations having already completed a three phase scheme to make minor access improvements at stations.  This work included such items as marking out disabled persons car parking bays, installation of tactile paving at the top and bottom of staircases, provision of contrasting step noising and installation of handrails.

Specific proposals are also being developed in conjunction with Northern Rail for the provision of improved access at local stations so that Metro can bid for match funding from the Department for Transport's "Access for All, Small Schemes" initiative.  A number of bids previously submitted for a new access at Ilkley Station and phase 3 minor accessibility improvements have been successful.

The Department for Transport has also identified Huddersfield, Shipley and Keighley stations within West Yorkshire as priority sites in the first two phases of its National step free "Access for All" initiative and is currently developing possible options for delivering access improvements at each location.
