In 2003 Metro, the local train operator (now Northern Rail) and Network Rail developed a ‘Masterplan’ for the long term improvement of the station. In the meantime, in line with these aspirations, a package of small scale, short term improvements has already been carried out, funded by Metro, Northern Rail and Network Rail.
Whilst these have included much needed improvements to lighting, safety and security and passenger facilities on the island platform, they have been minor in nature and fall short of the significant works that will be needed to totally transform the station and provide a facility that is fit for the 21st Century.
Metro is continuing to pursue, with Wakefield MDC, rail industry partners and others, new opportunities to enable the delivery of the more significant, remaining elements of the ‘Masterplan’. It is considered that, as the nearby Waterfront Development and Hepworth Gallery take shape there should be greater potential and incentive to develop the Kirkgate station site as a key public transport gateway.
A Kirkgate station stakeholder group has been formed and, chaired by Metro, it includes representatives from Wakefield MDC, Northern Rail, Network Rail and the Railway Heritage Trust. This group is exploring the potential for the site and is currently developing a brief which will outline the agreed aspirations for the site together with a pragmatic way of making the redevelopment happen.
