This week's new cinema releases: 08 May 2008

The bright lights of Las Vegas are coming to a big screen near you this weekend, with Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher's new film set in Sin City.

What Happens in Vegas is a typically hedonistic Vegas tale, including debauchery, big slot machine wins and a quick and easy marriage that does not run smoothly.

Main character Jack (Kutcher) meets Joy (Diaz) in Las Vegas and somehow they find themselves married after a crazy night on the city's main strip. When they awake the next morning, neither of them are sure what happened the previous night and decide to get a divorce. Then Jack wins $3 million on a slot machine and everything changes.

As Joy gave him the coin which won the jackpot she feels she is entitled to part of the cash. Her friend even encourages her to try and claim it all. Who is entitled to the money? Will the pair work out their differences? Amid the battle to take home the money, will the couple realise they actually quite suit each other after all? These are just some of the questions the film addresses.

Odeon's website suggests that people who enjoyed 2006 movie Little Miss Sunshine, which starred Abigail Breslin and Greg Kinnear, will love What Happens in Vegas.

Kutcher himself admitted on Friday Night With Jonathan Ross last month that he is partial to the odd flutter and explained that a number of the film's scenes were shot in the early hours of the Nevada morning as casino-goers began leaving the Las Vegas Strip to head back to their hotels.

For those looking to find out what Vegas has to offer, as well as a dash of romance this weekend, this film could be for you.

Also out at cinemas across the UK this weekend is Speed Racer - a Warner Bros picture directed by Andy and Larry Wachowski.

Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci and John Goodman all appear in this film, which centres around Speed Racer's mission to save his family's racing business from closing down.

In order to achieve his target, Speed (Hirsch) has to conquer the track that took the life of his brother Rex Racer - a man he idolised. Will the occasion be too much for him? Will the family business survive? The film covers issues to do with fast cars, corruption and family ties en route to giving you all of these answers.

Ricci plays the role of Speed's girlfriend, Trixie. In an interview with the Associated Press (AP), she called the new film "really awesome" and expressed her delight at working with the Wachowski brothers.

Commenting on why she took the part, she told the AP: "This sounded like so much fun. You get to go do an action-y film and a really stylised character. To me, that's fun."

You can use Metro's Journey Planner to find out how to get to cinemas across West Yorkshire by public transport.
