How to catch the bus

If it's been a while since you caught the bus, here are a few simple reminders

West Yorkshire’s bus services are operated by private operators such as Arriva, First, Keighley and District, Harrogate and District, Yorkshire Coastliner and Stagecoach Yorkshire to name a few.

Which bus?

All bus services show the service number and the final destination of where the bus is going. Some also show a colour reference to indicate a frequent service if you are unsure.

Flagging the bus

As the bus approaches please give a clear signal that you wish it to stop. This avoids any confusion that you may be waiting for a different service.

Destination and ticket

As you board, state your destination clearly to the driver, along with the type of ticket you require. The driver will be pleased to advise you if you are uncertain.

Fare

If you already know the fare, or when you are told how much it is, it will help if you can give the driver the exact amount. If they have to give you large amounts of change it may take time - causing delays - and the bus driver may not always carry sufficient change for high denomination notes.

Bus passes

If you have any pass or permit that entitles you to a discount such as a Senior Permit, PhotoCard or Young Persons PhotoCard, please show it to the driver as you state your destination. This will avoid the possibility of the driver issuing the wrong value ticket.

If you have a prepaid ticket, such as a MetroCard or the operator’s own ticket, please make sure you present it to the driver for checking as you board.

Check your tickets

Check that you receive the type of ticket you requested and that it covers the number of people you are paying for. Check your change immediately, as mistakes cannot be rectified later. Keep your ticket with you until you have completed all the journeys you have paid for.

Once your ticket transaction has been completed, take a seat and enjoy the journey.

Arriving at your destination stop

As the bus approaches the stop where you wish to get off, please press the bell once so that the driver is aware and remain seated until the bus stops.

When leaving the bus please ensure that you take all your personal possessions and litter with you.

A matter of safety

For the safety and comfort of customers, smoking is not permitted anywhere on buses or bus stations. Hot take away food and drink in cans or cartons may not be consumed on buses.

It is illegal to consume alcohol on any bus.

To avoid inconveniencing other passengers please keep the use of mobile phone to a minimum on board the bus, and keep personal stereos personal.

For the added safety and comfort of customers most buses are fitted with CCTV equipment.
