‘Extremely proud’ was how Metro Chairman Councillor Mick Lyons summed up his feelings about the award.
"These awards mean a lot to us because they are recognition from our colleagues in the transport industry,” said Councillor Lyons. “They are a tribute to all the hard work put in by Metro’s dedicated staff and by the members of the Passenger Transport Authority to develop public transport in West Yorkshire and to keep on putting passengers first."
The National Transport Awards are organised by the Centre for Transport Studies at Aberdeen’s Robert Gordon University and chaired by is Director, Professor David Begg who is also Chair of the Commission for Integrated Transport.
In his introduction to the Awards brochure, Professor Begg said their mantra is ‘delivery, delivery, delivery’. The judges also say that the awards are about rewarding those authorities ‘which have made a difference’.
Metro was the proud the recipient of the Joe Clarke PTA of the Year award for both 2001 and 2002 and this reognition recognition has been a stimulus to the organisation’s progress this year in delivering its strategy for public transport in West Yorkshire.
Through strong performance management, Metro seeks to develop staff and systems and ensure the consistent delivery of high quality, value for money services. This is reflected in its MetroPlan document setting out SMART targets for each team within the organisation.
All Metro projects and partnerships are developed in the context of a Quality Framework which underpins Metro’s activities, provides an overarching blueprint for staff and managers to follow, and is the basis of its performance measurement.
It is through these corporate procedures that Metro has embraced Best Value and at the same time ‘Put the Passenger First’.
